For Jolene Crawford, defining moments are the everyday moments. Since those moments can happen at any time, she’s always on the lookout for them.
“Defining moments, for me, are the small moments,” she said. “Watching students read a book that was challenging for them. Helping students become problem-solvers and experiencing their pride with them. The hallway hugs. The small defining moments are so often overlooked, but they are by far the most powerful.”
Crawford works with students in the special education resource room at Northwest Early Elementary School. She spent 13 years in early childhood education in the private sector and is now in her third year as a public school special education teacher.
A lot has changed for her in the past decade or so.
“Ten years ago, I didn't believe that I could be the person I am now: a mother of two children, a blessed wife, a special education teacher,” she said. “I dared to dream about having the opportunities that I have now, and every day they are forming the person I want to be.”
Crawford is a major supporter of Mountie Nation, which led to her being named a Northwest Schools 2019-20 Hashtag Award winner. This award goes to district employees who use social media to enhance Mountie Nation by posting about our greatness all year long.
There are still goals to accomplish, both in and outside the classroom. If she could learn anything, what would it be?
“I would love to learn how to become a successful, traveling, motivational speaker!”
And if she were to win the lottery?
“Purchase the land that my husband is dreaming of and build our forever home!”
