It’s a simple phrase. But it’s one that Northwest Early Elementary teacher Nicole Watson uses quite often. So it’s only fitting that she gave it as an answer when asked what the name of her autobiography would be.

 

“Welcome Friends.”

 

 

 

 

 

“It's a saying I use quite often in my classroom,” Watson said. “I also really enjoy doing random acts of kindness, especially when others need some sunshine in their lives.”

Watson has been bringing some sunshine to Northwest students for five years and is currently in her 10th year in education. She teaches first grade at Northwest Early Elementary and was named a 2018-19 100/0 Award winner. The 100/0 Award goes to an educator who consistently exemplifies what it means to give 100 percent to his or her students without expecting anything in return.

Ask Watson what three character traits define her and she’ll answer: “Loyal, caring and outgoing.”

But look at her answers to the following questions and you’ll see that she strongly values persistence and perseverance:

If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose? Why?
“I would choose Moana, She's persistent, stands up for what she believes in, and is adventurous.”

If you could meet anyone living or dead, who would you meet? Why?
“I'd love to meet Helen Keller. Her ability to stay motivated through adversity is admirable. I think her insight would really make an impact with children today.”

 

What advice do you have for kids struggling in school?
“One of my favorite children's books is ‘Giraffes Can't Dance.’ Gerald, the main character, thought he just couldn't dance. He found a good friend that taught him he couldn't dance YET! Once Gerald found the right song, he had great moves. For students, don't give up! You just haven't gotten it YET!”
