Dear Fellow Mounties,
I hope your summer has gone exceptionally well. Lots of exciting things happening here at NWEL! As the new school year quickly approaches I am excited to share in the greatness of Northwest Community Schools. It is my distinct pleasure to be able to work with the Mountie Nation.
The upcoming school year will bring challenges and many rewards. We are excited to have a new crop of third graders coming from Parnall Elementary and can’t wait to have them as a part of the NWEL family.
This coming year will be the fourth year of implementing the Nurtured Heart Approach in our district. An important element, to the highly effective Nurtured Heart Approach initiative, is the implementation and operation of the ABC (Academic Behavior Classroom) room.
The ABC room is a place where students are sent when their negative behavior is affecting their success. Most students only need a 15 minute timeout to regroup before returning to the classroom. Some students may require a lunch/recess detention or, in extreme cases, an in school suspension.
At the end of last year, students and staff were utilizing the ABC room in an extremely efficient manner. In fact, some students were able to go to the ABC room to complete work, with no negative consequences!
The strength of the Nurtured Heart Approach comes from clear cut rules and clear cut consequences. This allows us to eliminate negative attention and focus on the positive behaviors of the students. The more simple and clear we can make the rules, the greater the success. Below are the rules from last year that are non-negotiable expectations for ALL students.
· No ignoring the quiet sign
. No running or speed-walking
· No loud voices
· No negative looks, actions, gestures or words
· No disobeying adults
· Nothing left on the floor
I am anticipating a wildly successful year at NWEL. I know this will only happen if staff, parents, students and community can clearly communicate. Please, don’t hesitate to contact me with any concerns or accolades!
