• Introduction to Broadcasting (9, 10, 11, 12) (1 Trimester)

    This is an elective course available to all 9-12 grade students. Students are introduced to a variety of forms of broadcast media, software and equipment. Students will learn journalism basics, interviewing, reporting and researching techniques. Students will be introduced to media ethics and laws, terminology and basic video and broadcast journalism techniques. Assignments will be based on broadcast requirements and include video feature story presentations with specific rubrics.

    Advanced Broadcasting (9, 10, 11, 12) (2-3 Trimesters)

    This is an elective course available to all 9-12 grade students. Students will be required to enhance their skills in a variety of forms of broadcast media, software and equipment.  Students will learn additional and practice more often journalism basics, interviewing, reporting, and researching techniques.  Students will be reminded of media ethics and laws, terminology and enhanced video and broadcast journalism techniques.  Assignments will be based on broadcast requirements and include video stories, presentations, off site assignments, sporting assignments, local civic items of interest projects, and regular "column" creation with specific rubrics.

    ·         MUST earn a B or better in Introduction to Broadcasting

    ·         This class REQUIRES that students make after-school commitments to cover stories, videotape, complete deadlines, etc.  DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE UNWILLING OR UNABLE TO MAKE THIS KIND OF COMMITMENT.

    ·         Students MUST use computers to complete projects in this class.  If you should lose your computer privileges for any reason, you may receive a failing grade.

    ·         Students should be aware of their professionalism at all times.  Students in the Advanced Broadcasting program consistently deal with the public (videography and interview assignments, potential ad sales, etc.).  Students who display unprofessional behavior may receive a failing grade in this class.


     

    Journalism (9, 10, 11, 12) (3 Trimesters)

    Students wishing to be members of the newspaper staff must apply with the advisor and be accepted the spring prior. Journalism is designed for students interested in newspaper writing and layout design. Students will write news, features, editorials, and sports stories. They will also be involved in the writing and production of the Northwest High School student newspaper. They will study press law, ethics, Adobe InDesign and Photoshop software, and participate in state journalism competitions. In addition to editors and writers, there is a need for a photographer, a cartoonist and business manager.

    Prerequisite:  A "B" or better in English and teacher approval.
     

    Introduction to Print Media (9, 10, 11, 12) (1 Trimester)
     
    Introduction to Print Media is open to students interested in student publications or those who wish to gain experience in writing, layout/design and media publication skills. 
     
    Writing emphasis will be placed on features, leads, headlines, captions, editorials, and columns.  Layout/design elements discussed will include introductions to basic standards for both newspaper and magazine styles (emphasis on Adobe InDesign). Media Publication skills such as journalistic styles, ethics, advertising (both salesmanship and design), student press law, copy-editing, and students’ rights and responsibilities under the First Amendment will also be covered.  Students will be responsible for completing an end project that combines all basic print media elements explored in class.
     
    Students interested in joining the Moxie Mountie (Newspaper) or Retrospective (Yearbook) staffs are encouraged to successfully complete this course before applying for positions on either staff.

    Digital Media (9, 10, 11, 12) (1 Trimester)

    This is an elective course available to all 9-12 grade students. Students are introduced to a variety of forms of digital media. Students will learn photography, digital storytelling, various digital software, media ethics and laws, terminology and basic video and photojournalism techniques. All assignments will be based on photo requirements, digital presentations and designs with specific rubrics.

    Advanced Digital Media (9, 10, 11, 12) (1 Trimester)
    This is an elective course available to 9-12 grade students. Students are introduced to a variety of advanced forms of digital media. Students will enhance their knowledge of photography, digital storytelling, various digital software, media ethics and laws, terminology, and photojournalism techniques. All assignments will be based on photo requirements, digital presentations and designs with specific rubrics. Students will be required to create photo story packages based on after school, and local cultural and civic events. Students will be encouraged to enter multiple local and/or national photo contests.
    Prerequisite:  Digital Media (at least a B average or better) and/or the permission of the instructor.

    Intro to Theater (9, 10, 11, 12) (1 Trimester)
     The Intro the Theater class is an elective course that will work with students on the basics of acting. Topics like blocking, movement, voice, and etc. will be covered. At the end of the term students will perform for an audience. 

    There is no prerequisite for this class and students in grades 9 – 12 are welcome.

    Advanced Theater (10, 11, 12) (1 Trimester)

    This class will add to what was learned in the Intro to Theater class. It will allow students who are serious about the art of acting to take the next step in performing.  The majority of the class will be spent on character and scene development.  They will learn and perform scenes that require a variety of emotions and characters.  Prerequisites: Intro to Theater or HS play and permission from the teacher. Offered every other year.

    Speech 1 (9, 10, 11, 12) (1 Trimester)

    Students are introduced to a variety of forms of both verbal and nonverbal communication in this elective course. Students learn outlining and organizing, research techniques, voice control, and the basic elements of oral communication. All assignments will be based on written requirements and oral presentations.

    Writing/Directing Plays (9, 10, 11, 12) (1 Trimester)

    Students will read multiple short plays to see a variety.  Students will then explore the aspect of writing short plays and directing them.  Prerequisites:  Intro to Theater or approval from Mr. Collins.  Offer every other year.

     

    Yearbook (9, 10, 11, 12) (3 Trimesters)

    Yearbook is a journalism-based course designed around the creation of the school’s yearbook.  It is the job of all class members to take pictures, sell ads, write copy, organize the design and layouts, write headlines and captions, etc. – in other words, students are responsible for all aspects of the organization and presentation of each year’s worth of memories.
